The Ortho Evra® patch is the first contraceptive patch approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the United States.
Although the pill and the birth control patch both increase estrogen levels, women who use the Ortho Evra® patch can be exposed to up to 60 percent more estrogen than those taking the pill. The deaths of at least 23 women have been linked to use of the birth control patch.
Increased amounts of estrogen exposure can cause higher risks of serious side effects. Negative effects of excess estrogen may include heart attack, stroke, and blood clots. These risks greatly increase if you are over the age of 35 or a smoker.
Because Ortho Evra® patch side effects and risks are so grave, patients using the prescription must be vigilant about noticing the early warning signs of blood clots, heart attack, and stroke. Contact a physician immediately if you suffer from the onset of any of these symptoms: severe headache, vomiting, nausea, vision problems, chest pressure or pain, increased or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, or any other symptoms that cause you alarm.
If you are still using the Ortho Evra® patch, you need to discuss your risks with your doctor. In light of the recent information regarding risks, many physicians are advising their patients to utilize a different form of birth control.
Currently, the Ortho Evra® patch is the only birth control patch approved for use in the United States. Other forms of contraception are available, but are administered differently from the skin patch.
In November 2005, the FDA updated warnings on the labeling of the Ortho Evra® patch to include a possible increased risk of blood clots, heart attack, and stroke. After reviewing a report in February 2006 that seems to link Ortho Evra® patch use with this increased risk, the FDA stated that these findings were only preliminary and do not require immediate action.
There has not yet been an official Ortho Evra® patch recall, but as the risks associated with the birth control patch become more evident, more physicians are advising their patients to switch to an alternate method of contraception.
